Accommodation often represents the biggest chunk of your travel expenses, which is why housesitting is widely known as the ideal way to travel on a budget, experience new places & cultures and live like a local anywhere in the world.

But have you ever thought of doing it in your own city? House sitting locally is often overlooked as being not very adventurous, but it can bring so much fun into your everyday life, not to mention building your profile as a house sitter.

So, as a big fan of exploring locally, here are my top 4 reasons why you should start housesitting and become a tourist in your own city:

1. Discover your city with new eyes

We are often so busy with our daily routine that we become blind and don’t pay attention to what our city has to offer. Moving into a home that’s not your own for a few days, weeks or months will automatically take you out of this routine. You’ll feel more inclined to go exploring your city from a different perspective. You may even learn more about its history, discover hidden gems and off the beaten track attractions, and rediscover places you haven’t been to in a long time.

2. Live in different parts of your city

Not sure if you want to stay in your current neighbourhood? Housesitting is a fantastic way to discover what different parts of your area are really like. Whether it’s an apartment in the heart of the CBD, a house in the suburbs or a farm sit out of town, by exploring different parts of your area you get to experience each neighbourhood like a local.

It’s a perfect option for “feeling the vibe” of a place before committing to renting or purchasing in the area.

3. Saving money

With the cost of living getting higher and higher in Australia, housesitting can be a great way to save on rent. Indeed, there are many long-term housesits where the owners allow you to stay in their home rent-free in exchange for taking care of their home and pets. By staying in your hometown, you can continue to work - and therefore earn an income - while enjoying the comforts of a normal home and saving money by not paying rent. Not only will you pay no rent, but you'll also save money on electricity, water, Wi-Fi and other bills. Money saved that you can spend later on your next trip!

4. Building a strong profile to travel further

Your house sitter profile is your first point of contact with homeowners so it needs to be the best in order to set yourself apart from other sitters. One of the first things a homeowner will look for on your profile is your reviews and it can sometimes be hard to get those first reviews.

Housesitting locally is a great way to help you get you started and once you’ve secured your first sit, and got that five-star rating on your profile, you’ll be on your way to being an expert on your local area.

Just wanted to thank you for a truly amazing service. I have really enjoyed all my sits, meeting new people and animals and of course making friends along the way. The last 18 months have given me the space and time to save and this week I achieved my goal by buying a new home. Couldn't have done it without you so a huge THANK YOU Sandi
