GentleJack

Old enough, Pensioner ex penpusher not a philanthropist

Preamble:
I am an aged pensioner. My new meme for owners is "please do not forget that this is a holiday\ vacation\ respite for your pet(s) as well as yourself & that I am an individual expecting truth in advertising & all dealings".
My unpaid broadcasting career was of folk & traditional music, performed poetry, classical music & jazz. Interviewees always enjoyed being invited to tell their stories. If you are paranoid, OCD, duplicitous, abusive or stupid we are not likely to get on so please just reply not compatible.
I am double vaccinated & to my chagrin Pfizer boosted against C19.
My last furry companion was my beloved PussPuss who shared my life for over 22 years.
In earlier times an inherited old Labrador, and a Jack Russell Terrier were companions. Zebra finches and mice have briefly been part of my life.
A 3 month premmie born daughter occupied a lot of my life when I didn't have animal companions. She now has her own family.

I was left for dead at the side of the road by a hit & run motorist in 2003. Consequently I now have 2 prosthetic joints but no longer need a walking stick.
A Nordic walking pole if carried is now only to fend off ferals to protect your animal & myself if threatened.

Any questions please ask.

A recent defammatory review claimed that I did not return the property clean & failed to look after an owner traumatised dog requiring 7½ vet prescribed anti anxiety tablets & regular treatment from an animal behaviourist. None of this was advertised or stated before I arrived for the engagement. I now include in my photos a composite of photos of the house condition when I left. No complaint was made til 6 weeks later after I expressed dissatisfaction at the owner's failure to return an expensive security key to me. I & I believe Housesitters have requested evidence of the allegations made. They have not been supplied. I can only conclude that I've been dealing with a disingenuous owner lying through omission & prepared to make libellous review.

If you find that I have contacted you but my availability calendar shows me booked it either means that I've made a huge mistake (goofed) or the booked sit includes days that can be covered by backups in the event of airline delays. Back ups are necessary for the protection of your animals, no matter who is looking after them.

Housesitting considerations:
In a nutshell - I provide care for your animals only bettered by that you give to them or possibly better if you have partner & children also requiring attention, I require a contribution to my motoring cost to & from yours before I leave my home, I do not charge for my time, I require you to arrange\ have in place emergency backup for if anything disastrous happens like my being unable to care for your animals because I've been mugged by your local thugs at Woolies and hospitalised, I need a hard bed or space for my own camp bed to sleep on, lastly a phone number or email address to send your daily reports & photos of how your pets are enjoying their time with me. I also prefer to meet you at start and finish of your vacation.
I try to leave the least or no footprint on your lives other than happy fulfilling ones.
Anything else that is not in my profile & references just give me a call to clarify - please send an SMS first to say that it's you so I will answer & not ignore thinking it spam.

Long windedly:
* I do not charge for my sitting time nor expect you to provide bed, linen, crockery, pans, food or drink. I bring my own in my car. My bed requires 2.5 m. x 1.5 m. floor space in shelter under a roof. If you have a bed suitable for a bad back I have protective mattress covers. Please advise if I need the arctic sleeping suit. :-)

* I care for your pets in your house - feeding, grooming, walking, medicine administration, love, as if they are my own. I try to maintain a schedule of daily grooming to rapidly identify ticks or fleas picked up as well as create bonding & good hygiene. Please let me know if I need to bring my own sterilized brushes, combs & clippers.
* I do basic house cleaning, basic emergency repairs & or repair trade arrangement-management, basic garden & pot plant watering, & provide a security presence. I do mail collection, rubbish bin collection & roadside set out.
I report to you daily by SMS or email supplying professionally edited photographs. This is also a security measure for your pets & you. It is therefore essential that you respond or make other arrangements if unable to respond each day. It's also pleasing to be told that the photo caught a humourous moment, good pose, expression or experience in my care of your animals.

*Please note that I have my own residence in Western Victoria & expect arranged contribution of return cost of motoring to your location. This will not exceed, unless you wish to generously gift more, an amount based on Google maps shortest travel distance multiplied by the ATO basic per kilometre motoring cost. If running a business I believe that this is tax deductible for you but check with your advisors & or the ATO.
Payment is required prior to starting out on my journey to you but is fully refunded if I don't get there.

*If having arrived I have an accident, fall ill or become unable to continue caring for your pets & house during the contracted period I expect you to have emergency plans to ensure your animals continuing welfare whether it be your relative, friend, neighbour, kennels, vet or local council animal protection rangers.

*If lockdown for covid19 or other reason is introduced that prevents me from returning home I expect you to continue to provide me the same degree of comfort given whilst caring for your animals in your absence, either at your residence or at a local motel. Every effort is made to return to my home & this requirement, despite numerous lockdowns has never had to be invoked.

*I am not responsible for your vacation having to be cancelled for any reason.

* At the beginning of the caring period I expect you or your representative to introduce me to the animals, the property & all of their idiosyncracies. And, at the end for you or your representative to inspect that the animals & property are received back in good order.
(It's no use whinging about an unswept floor, dirty cup, unemptied rubbish bin etc. when I'm 200 kilometres down the home road. I will not return to do it & I do not expect to lose a rating star because you didn't tell me that you didn't want fire ashes safely spreading in an empty garden bed whilst it was raining.)

Oh, & don't forget to ask for your key back.

* I also require you to provide written instructions stating each animal's name, feeding times & quantities, plus their exercise routines which if possible will be adhered to. Vet names & phone numbers.
Please supply your phone numbers for Australian, WhatsApp or Signal App contact, email address for overseas or limited overseas contact, your emergency backup names, numbers & addresses.

* I need to know your household operating procedures:
bin nights,
mail box location (& key if required),
fuse box, electric generator operation manual, vacuum cleaner locations & cleaning\ disassembly instructions,
tv, video & washing machine usage instructions.
Gardener, cleaner, dog walker & other scheduled trades visits during your absence. . . & if expecting a visit from Freddy Krueger the time & date, the key to the shotgun cabinet & police panic button! 🤣

* List household forbidden substances because of normal occupant health issues eg. Shellfish, gluten intolerance, cleaning products etc.
FYI I do not smoke or take drugs & rarely drink other than rare Apera or Cooper's Ultra light beer. I am a carnivore & like hot dishes.

*Lastly I need to know your location before I set off to travel there.

For anything else that you wish to know please get in contact.
Thank you for reading & stay safe.

Richard is a lovely chap and very experienced pet sitter who took exceptional care of our two rather sensitive whippets for a month in May 2023. Our dogs, being whippets, can be a tad high strung and on the verge of anxious, but they settled in very well with Richard and had a fabulous month. Richard took them on many walks and adventures and gave them plenty of love and attention. Communication was great from our initial contact and throughout the stay with plenty of updates and pictures ... MORE

LUCY (Lethbridge VIC, May 2023 - 4 weeks - 1 day)
Thanks for a genuine review Lucy. I look forward to seeing Winnie & Stella again when I'm down your way & of course if you need them looking after again & our calendars match. Stay safe.
We have just had Richard come and dog sit for our special girl - Bronte. She has a few dietary problems and Richard went beyond our expectations with making sure she was fed all the correct foods. He took Bronte out everyday, often in his car to beaches and parks which was a real bonus as she loves a car trip. We were updated daily with lots of photos of their adventures together. It was a real holiday at home for her. He bought all his own linen and utensils which was a real bonus and ... MORE

ANN (Wandana Heights VIC, Jul 2023 - 3 weeks)
Despite the atrocious cold wet weather that affected both Bronte & myself this engagement has been one of my more standout ones. Bronte is the first dog that I've trusted to walk & play off the lead when out & about. Having her in the car with me was an added bonus. I've always said since a very ... MORE
Richard was a pleasure to deal with. His communication was clear and timely. We felt like we knew him before he arrived. He arrived when he said he would, and clearly cares about the animals he cares for. We have two staffies - we knew one would be fine, but the other is quite timid. The photos Richard sent while we were away were reassuring - she took to him very quickly and wasn't that bothered with us when we returned! He treated them with so much care and attention, the dogs were very well ... MORE

CINDY (Maiden Gully VIC, Jun 2023 - 1 week 2 days)
Thank you Cindy & Kelvin for your warm welcome, intelligent responsive communication & now thoughtful review. It was a pleasure looking after Billy & stranger nervous Lacey. I was pleased to have effected some behaviour modification in her in that respect. I thank Lacey for sharing that behavioural ... MORE
The house was absolutely filthy on return. Wrong key. Promises of cleaned house and a meal on return, upon unpacking we spent two hours cleaning, which had also been done before richards arrival. At least 5-6 text messages each day became overwhelming and none of the pet requests we had for the pets followed, Richard made up his own ideas of how it worked. He is now claiming elder abuse due to the fact I have said he has harrassed and sent many text messages and I am actually ropeable. Due to ... MORE

TASCHA (Warrnambool VIC, Apr 2023 - 2 weeks 3 days)
Richard was an great sitter,l. He looked after our pets and garden with love. He kept us informed with daily messages and photos. Richard even planted some new plants and vegetables in our garden. He brings all the things he needed with him so apart from the air fryer he didn't use our things. We arrived home to a full cooked dinner too. Our pets are missing him already. Thank you Richard.

PAUL (Milang SA, Feb 2023 - 1 week 4 days)
Thank you Paul for not only trusting your lovely dogs Poppy & Cyril together with dear old cat Saffy to my care. The care of your house, daily garden copious poo patrol did result in my unusual inspiration to a few benefial additions to your vegetable plot & flower \tree boarder. Unlike some, your ... MORE
Richard looked after my 2 whippets and my home for 2 weeks. The pets were well loved and looked after during his stay. I got daily updates with photos and it was obvious they were being treated with care. Richard left the home in excellent condition, the house was very clean and sanitised and the plants were all well watered and maintained. Highly recommend. Thanks Richard.

AMBER (Bittern VIC, Jan 2023 - 2 weeks 1 day)
Thanks Amber. Zephy & Hardy were a pleasure to care for & develop a working pack with. I hope that our calendars will align again in the future & that I will be invited back. If it can't happen I heartily recommend this petsit to all future genuine sitters for the good nature of the animals & ... MORE
Richard was a reliable, diligent and communicative house and pet sitter who looked after our 2 cats and garden for 3 weeks whilst we were overseas. We received several updates almost everyday reporting on the health and wellbeing of our cats, along with info about the weather and our garden. We were extremely reassured that our house and pets were his top priority. As his next sit was in the same area he even split the costs of his travel between the 2 sits which was very reasonable of him. ... MORE

LIV (FRANKSTON VIC, Dec 2022 - 3 weeks)
Thanks Liv. Mr Black & Tawny Port were well behaved in your abscence & soon responded to my voice when called. Both took to daily grooming though Mr Black vomited the longest furball that I've ever seen - I thought he was regurgitating a frankfurter sausage or one of your daughter's socks! They ... MORE
Richard was the perfect sitter for Bronte while I was away. He took terrific care of her, took into account her idiosyncrasies and stubborn tendencies, and got her to walk most days, which is an achievement. He found other ways to entertain her and burn off energy on days she would not go for a walk. Bronte had an ear infection and needed medication, ear drops and a visit to the vet while I was away. And Richard took care of these things without an issue and made homemade food for Bronte when ... MORE

CATHY (Natimuk VIC, Sep 2022 - 17 days)
No rating Richard is an experienced sitter with excellent reviews. He brings a strong commitment to animals left in his care. During our absence we received regular daily updates on our cats, their progress and disposition. These were always accompanied by a series of photographs showing the highlights of their day. It was such a reassurance to know that our elderly animals were being so well looked after and cared for. On our return it was clear that Richard had extended the same care to our house, ... MORE
NOEL (Stawell VIC, Jul 2022 - 1 week 4 days)
Thanks Noel. Hopefully if their is a next time that you need me you will be off on a pleasure trip. Please give my new friends Lillee & Trumper the strokes and love they enjoyed from me. Once their trust is won their return affection is delighful. The cat's tray litter was the most ... MORE
Richard did a fantastic job of house sitting. His communication is exceptional and he builds trust before he even starts. Richard was amazing with our dog, Dusty. He gave her so much love and attention, updating us daily with photos and stories. He built up a great relationship and treated her like his own pet. We came home to a very happy and calm dog, a spotless house with the fire lit. Very grateful for such wonderful care of Dusty.

CATHY (Barongarook VIC, Jun 2022 - 8 days)
Thanks Cathy for being an excellent hostess and genuine caring person. I only wish that your holiday had been longer - lots longer. I was just starting to find my way around. Your tips on walks & the local market were much appreciated by both me & Dusty, she's a beautiful strong willed ... MORE
Richard was awesome with my cats. He spoiled them and made them comfortable including my palliative care and shy cat whom came in for him without a problem. I really appreciate what he did for my 3 cats. However his housekeeping skills leave a lot to be desired. I left my house clean and tidy however it was not returned to me clean and tidy. Also he expected renumeration to help with his travel costs which is unusual. I have never had housesitters telling me they were not happy as we didn't ... MORE

LIA (Yarroweyah VIC, Apr 2022 - 2 weeks 1 day)
Lol. Lia is a professional housecleaner charging $50/hr. Cost of kenneling gardening several acres & watering agisted cattle etc.in the boondocks $3000+. Lia may claim OCD like standards but left centipeed & hair on the floor. Furthermore her stated desire was the care of her cats not cleaning. The ... MORE
Richard is a very kind and considerate man. We felt very comfortable leaving our home and 6 animals in his care. I'm sure Alfie and Nelson especially are missing his company. We were especially appreciative of his consideration when bringing treats and gifts for our pets and our daughter, who has had a lovely time with her new toys. It was comforting to receive updates and photos of the animals while we were away. We wouldn't hesitate in having Richard back again.

SARAH (Scarsdale VIC, Mar 2022 - 1 week 4 days)
Thank you for your honest review. Looking after Alfie, Nelson, Bessie & the girls was a delight as Alfie & Nelson are very affectionate & not afraid to return any given to them. Two beautiful companions. Taking Alfie for a swim in the dam and Nelson learning to respond to my voice when name called ... MORE
Richard was very attentive and caring of my three dogs. Richard cared for them, gave them loads of attention and played/walked them. I received daily messages & photos which made me feel very secure knowing my three furkids were happy. My home and property was cleaned and organized on my return. I would not hesitate to recommend Richard for anyone wanting a caring, attentive & responsible house/pet sitter. Louie, Pounce, Gracie and myself thank you & are very appreciative of the care you took ... MORE

INGRID (WARRACKNABEAL VIC, Mar 2022 - 7 days)
Thank you for being one of the few who thoughtfully truly & intelligently care for their animal companions & their welfare. It was a pleasure looking after LP &G and I will delightedly do it again if asked even if it means moving out of my comfort zone to Queensland to do it!
As our dog is aged, it was very comforting and reassuring to have daily photos and reports of her progress. Lucy was very happy with Richard and he enjoyed her company as well. It may have been a coincidence but my new plants were in full bloom on my return, perhaps Richard has a special green thumb. The house was keen and tidy, and as Richard provided his own linen, there was no laundry left to do. My only hesitation in recommending Richard, is that some one else will book him and then he ... ROBYN (Ferntree Gully VIC, Feb 2022 - 1 week 2 days)
Thank you Robyn. Lucy is a well behaved old girl still liking her walks & socialising. In the unlikely event that there is an afterlife I'm sure that she will be there waiting to greet me tail wagging & cheerfully yapping. That however is fanciful fairy tale.
Very good communication and lots of pictures of our furry and feathered friends, easy to deal with, takes pride in caring for animals, very clean, our pets were pampered, house was left in same condition as we left it, will be asking Richard to sit again

GLENN AND KIRBY (Donald VIC, Jan 2022 - 1 week)
Thanks Glenn, Kirby, Texas, Lyric and Victory for entrusting me with the menagerie. It gave me a big fillip being able not only in helping enable your family's holiday but also in meeting your well behaved, organised & polite children. I was delighted to be able to help young Texas with his first ... MORE
Great experience, Richard is a true gent and a real character! Kept us up to date with our cats the whole time, with photos, updates and funny stories. Took total responsibility for house and pets and made us feel secure about the whole arrangement from the beginning. Strongly recommend!

ZACH (Frankston South VIC, Jul 2021 - 1 week)
Thanks Zach. Life is full of swings & roundabouts & your sit was in beautiful contrast to the last sit's ugliness. I wish that everyone was like you and your family. I felt, as I believe should be the case, that in entrusting me to look after your cats and home that you were effectively making ... MORE
I chose Richard due to his great reviews, however the sit did not go well, without posting a long review about him, one of his last texts to me that had me driving as fast as I could to get home, my sister calling the police, and a friend going to collect my cat was quote "No if that is your attitude I will find the nearest animal welfare shelter and leave Mooshka there" This reaction from Richard was in response to me telling him he could leave in the morning to head home and I would be ... HEATHER (Raymond Island VIC, May 2021 - 2 weeks 2 days)
I am currently obtaining advice regarding the abuse by Heather together with her dishonesty in advertising the sit. For the uninformed Victoria introduced a lockdown commencing midnight Thursday 26 May 2021. You will note that Heather proposed breaking the law by driving from 1 hours distance ... MORE
Disappointed to hear that Richard's experience of our place was marred by his own personal circumstance (distance to travel and his other plans falling through). The pets were attended to however their unique behaviours were not respected. We asked that the cat be kept inside which he questioned and then allowed him out, on a lead, but since then he has not stopped trying to escape. We requested the dog to stay off the furniture when unsupervised (also not an unreasonable request) which also ... MORE

ROXANNE (Heidelberg West VIC, Apr 2021 - 4 days)
The cat wanted out from the start. The dog was supervised.Having been the prime caregiver to a 3mth premie baby I find your excuses lame. Backupwas inadequate per the information supplied. Your neighbour knew nothing about your plan for me to leave the keys with him & was not in residence.2stars on ... MORE
Thanks very much, your sitting and caring for our charges was greatly appreciated. Richard is clearly an experienced house sitter and dog minder, and certainly undertook everything we'd asked him to do. Our dog, Keithy, took to Richard very well. Keithy doesn't always quickly warm to adult visitors, but was happy with Richard. Upon our return, the house was exactly as we'd left it. Thanks Richard.

CAROLINE (Rushworth VIC, Mar 2021 - 6 days)
Delighted to have met you & your family. I loved the sit, Keighey was a surprise, I've never looked after such a big dog before and would have loved longer. Yours was one of my more memorable sits not only for my enjoyment of the environment, I'll be looking for more sits in the area, but also ... MORE
Richard was exceptional with communicating with us before and during the sit. Ollie is shy with new people but Richard kept us posted while Ollie was in hiding, luckily he eventually came out and Richard was rewarded with purrs from his new buddy. We loved receiving the updates and photos of the cats. Thanks Richard for taking such good care of them.

LORETTA (Laverton VIC, Mar 2021 - 5 days)
Disconcerting but sometimes part of the process - just glad we sorted the problem out. I hope to see my 2 new chums Ollie & Millie again in the future, Thanks for letting me look after them.
Richard was a wonderful house sitter. Animals love him. Received up dates through out my time away . Richard went beyond more then I expected. Animals were spoil with love and treats .

MELINDA (Newborough VIC, Feb 2021 - 16 days)
I would say "Aww thanks Melinda" but for the fact that that you & the 4 M's have already given me the biggest vote of approval by booking me for another two weeks in April. As for giving love I'm selfish in that I do it hoping to get it returned. Millie, Marley, Milo & Mittens are full of love & ... MORE
Richards communication was thorough and he left the house immaculate including leaving some left over treats. Its a shame the cat didnt bond but thats cats for you.

DEB (Creswick VIC, Jan 2021 - 4 days)
Richard house/pet sat for us recently for one week. All animals were looked after & happy. It was a first farm sit for Richard, he even fed 5 poddy lambs. He said he enjoyed his time here on the farm.

ELIZABETH (Temora NSW, Mar 2020 - 1 week)
Thanks Elizabeth & Henry for your hospitality & NSW country sanity. I must admit that 5 lambs, 4 kittens, 9 or was it 11 cats and 2 sheepdogs came as a new challenge particularly as I was recovering from a UTI infection for half of the time. I'm pleased that your hospitalisation was successful ... MORE
Richard took good care of my cat and house while I was away, much appreciated.
