Our home

Our horse, chickens and cat need a carer on our 10-acre property in Kurrajong.
Our home is on a quiet dead-end street. A car is essential as there is no public transport. We are about 7 minutes’ drive from Kurrajong Village, 15-20 minutes from larger supermarkets (North Richmond and Richmond) and close to Wollemi National Park. Tourist attractions such as Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens and Hillbilly Cider are only a short drive away up Bells Line of Road, and there are some great local ... Read more

Our home is on a quiet dead-end street. A car is essential as there is no public transport. We are about 7 minutes’ drive from Kurrajong Village, 15-20 minutes from larger supermarkets (North Richmond and Richmond) and close to Wollemi National Park. Tourist attractions such as Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens and Hillbilly Cider are only a short drive away up Bells Line of Road, and there are some great local restaurants. Relax on our spacious verandah and enjoy the rural peace and serenity, or head out for walks in nearby bushland.
The house is basic but comfortable, with queen-size beds, two fridges, microwave, and everything you would expect to need for your stay. We have reliable nbn internet, good Telstra mobile service, Netflix and Prime, a dishwasher, clothes dryer, reverse cycle air conditioner and a spa bath. We are on tank water but unless we are in a drought this is never a problem. The toilet is a septic system and flushes with dam water.
Ideally we would like to find a couple to house-sit but an individual would be fine too. We would definitely prefer someone with previous horse experience. We regularly need a house sitter so you may have seen this advert before with different dates.

We have two well-mannered Arabian horses (only one will be at home for this house-sit), three friendly Isa Brown chickens and an affectionate Tonkinese cat.
The chickens Penny, Eggatha Christie (Eggie) and Mary Shelley (Shell) are locked in at night and free-range during the day. They come running for their dinner when called in the evening, which makes it easy to put them to bed. They will reward you with plenty of eggs, not always laid in the nesting boxes though! Their henhouse would need poop picked up daily (takes only a couple of moments) and their water changed and food topped up as needed.
Sasha has a cat door for daytime and is locked inside at night. She is fed dinner in the evening and has biscuits to graze on at any time. She will happily snuggle up with you on the bed.
The stay-at-home horse is a bit more complicated. Evie is an endurance horse who is fed twice a day - hay in the morning and a mixed feed with personalised supplements at night. She was clipped at the start of winter so her rugs (blankets) need to be put on, taken off, and changed according to the weather. She is easy to handle and the rug changes are done at feeding time. There is a detailed instruction board and everything is clearly labelled. Their water tubs will need refilling and occasional cleaning. Our previous housesitters have found everything very easy to understand and follow.

medicationMedication/treatment required

Sasha gets 4cyte drops mixed into her wet food. She likes the taste.

Our garden

local_floristGarden or plant care

Average - We have a ride-on mower and would be grateful if you could run it over the lawn if the spring grass starts growing. If the weather is hot or dry, there are automatic waterers on timers for the gardens.

Important info

The nearest regular public transport is Richmond railway station, about 20 minutes drive away. So a reliable car is essential.
In Spring we occasionally see a beautiful Diamond Python take up residence in our shed. We have named her "Sheebak" because "she's back!" She is harmless and very placid.

What an absolute treat it was to house sit for Fiona and Dave. Their home and property is beautiful, and a tranquil little oasis outside of the city. Maintaining the property was a breeze with all the views to look at while you're doig so, and shops at Kurrajong or North Richmond are just a short scenic drive away. So glad I got the oppurtunity to sit for you both. Fiona and Dave are absolutely lovely people and I cant thank you both enough for the hospitality. Hope to be back soon.

We had a wonderful time looking after the farm for Fiona and Dave. Cozy cottage nestled on a beautiful farm, the horses, chickens and cat were gentle, friendly and we really enjoyed getting to know them and interacting with them. Fiona and Dave were very hospitable, provided great instructions, and communications was easy ! Really enjoyed our stay, and would love to sit for Fiona and Dave again !!
