Before I left, I showed them the house, garden, irrigation and bird/fish feeding routines and John was way ahead of me. He was already fixing the slamming screen door and dealing with my impulse buy rose bush. Dot was looking after me as I worried about packing, travelling and my upcoming business. Between them, they made my departure smooth and I knew I didn't need to worry about home while I was away. Dot's beautiful calm manner helped me with last minute packing and John was there cleaning my windscreen before I left, which brought me to tears, being cared for like that.
I texted a few times during my trip and felt totally assured that all was well. They sent me photos that made my heart swell, showing the work they had done, totally unexpected and wonderful. They had listened to my garden dreams, re-potted my poor old cacti, replanted the feral MIL Tongue rock garden and incorporated my rose bush in the best place. They'd cleaned the kitchen skylight, fixed the screen door and made the garden grow! They'd even scrubbed the algae out of the bird baths and kept my bees happy. The Willie wagtails, goldfish and bees thrived and were as demanding as ever on my return.
The house was spotless with everything packed away and shipshape. This was like a professional clean and when I came home, I was free to rest a few days before I returned to my chores.
John and Dot are an amazing, generous couple who can cope with anything. Between them, they have a beautiful balance of wisdom, knowledge, energy, fun and calm and it seems to me that they enjoy being in someone else's world for a time.
This is my first experience of inviting a house-sitter into my home. My Captain Bill is away on family business and we have rarely been away from home together. Knowing there are people like John and Dot makes many things possible for the Captain and me and for our neighbours in Sunset Beach. Thank you John and Dot.
